Jonkler Trying Not to Laugh refers to a series of memes based on two photoshopped images of Jonkler, a memetic character based on the Batman character Joker, edited after the IShowSpeed Trying Not to Laugh meme. The format has been used in a similar fashion to the original version and gained virality in early September 2024.

Origin

On September 4th, 2024, Redditor UltimateFatbear2006 posted an edit of a popular image of the DC Comics character Joker grinning, removing his smile to give him a more neutral facial expression (original image shown below, top; edit shown below, bottom). The edit garnered over 5,700 upvotes in the /r/BatmanArkham shitposting community in one week.^[1]

On September 5th, 2024, X^[2] / Twitter user @TheMrPasuqale posted the image along with another edit photoshopped to look like the IShowSpeed Trying Not to Laugh meme, reacting to a remix of "Chaos Island: Act 1" from the upcoming video game Sonic X Shadow Generations. The post (shown below) received over 1,700 reposts and 40,000 likes in five days.

Spread

On September 6th, 2024, X^[3] user @Venommoe quoted the post with a reference to the IShowSpeed's clip, with their post gaining over 210 reposts and 3,400 likes in four days (shown below).

In the following days, the images saw spread on X / Twitter as they were used as reactions and a caption meme format. For example, on September 9th, 2024, X^[4] user @DanBoyWonder used one of the images to react to rumors about an upcoming DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. The post (shown below) received over 80 reposts and 1,500 likes in one day.
