Joji Spoon

About

Joji Spoon refers to a series of image macros and photoshops featuring an image of a spoon engraved with the word "Joji" on the handle and "Gimme Love" on the head. Joji Spoon jokes began to pop up across social media in April of 2020 when musician Joji dropped a selection of merchandise for his single "Gimme Love".^[1] One of the items available was an engraved, oversized spoon.

Origin

On April 16th, 2020, Redditor cockinp43069^[2] posted a screenshot of a "Gimme Love" engraved spoon on the Joji merch store to /r/Pink0mega simply titled, "Joji spoon" (shown below, left). The post gained over 200 upvotes in 7 months, and started a chain of "Joji spoon" comments under the post (shown below, right).

On April 16th, Redditor Alexlw00^[3] posted an image macro to /r/Pink0mega featuring a spoon photoshopped to look engraved with the words "gimme love" on the head and "Joji" on the stem (shown below). This is the first known use of the image macro on the web.

Spread

On May 11th, 2020, YouTuber Maxmoefoe tweeted Alexlw00's Joji Spoon image macro along with the caption, "JOJI SPOON 🥄 JOJI SPOON" garnering over 2,900 retweets and 39,000 likes in 6 months^[4] (shown below, left). On the same day, he made a tweet consisting only of the word "JOJI SPOON" and the spoon emoji, garnering another 2,500 retweets and 32,000 likes, and inspiring a wall of copy-pasted text in the comments section.^[5] 2 hours after Max's post, Dolan Dark commented with a You Know, I'm Something of a Scientist Myself Joji Spoon photoshop, gaining over 7,600 likes^[6] (shown below, right).

On May 13th, the official Twitter account for the podcast Cold Ones^[7] posted a photoshopped Joji Spoon image ironically suggesting that Joji Spoon would be the next guest on the podcast, garnering over 20,000 likes and 870 retweets in 6 months (shown below).
