The edits, which often feature funny overlayed captions and slow motion effects, started going viral on TikTok in early February 2026 and were popularized by TikToker @_bamboclat, inspiring other users to make their own edits of Kiriakou.

Origin

John Kiriakou is a former intelligence officer for the CIA. He was arrested in January 2012 for whistleblowing and sharing classified information about the CIA's interrogation techniques. He was released from prison in February 2015 and continued to openly speak about his time at the CIA. Kiriakou has appeared in numerous videos and interviews through the 2010s and 2020s.[1][2]

In February 2026, edits of Kiriakou telling hard-to-believe stories and making allegations about the CIA started going viral on TikTok. On February 3rd, 2026, TikToker[3] @_bamboclat posted an edit of Kiriakou talking to an interviewer on the Diary Of a CEO YouTube[4] channel about a time when the CIA told him to act gay to get information on someone, garnering over 1.5 million views in a week. The edit is captioned, "What is the CIA bro."

TikToker @_bamboclat continued to post similar edits of Kiriakou over the next few days, inspiring other TikTokers to do the same.

On February 5th, 2026, TikToker[5] @_bamboclat posted an edit of Kiriakou telling a story about the CIA dosing strangers with drugs, garnering over 1.5 million views in six days.



On February 9th, TikToker[6] @nise_lox posted an video counting down some of the best Kiriakou edits, garnering over 1.8 million views in two days.



On February 10th, TikToker[7] @jeff.does.edits posted an edit of a clip where Kiriakou talks about how he never directly killed anybody for the CIA, but was involved in an incident where they accidentally killed a janitor, garnering over 10 million views in a day.
