Joe Biden Falls Off Bike is a viral video of U.S. President Joe Biden falling off a bicycle during a promotional bike ride in Delaware. The stumble resulted in multiple memes, reactions and tweets in June 2022, many in regards to his age, health and condition to be running the country. It also prompted a response from former President Donald Trump who said, "I make this pledge to you today, I will never, ever ride a bicycle." Additionally, a parody headline from news outlet The Atlantic called the bike crash "heroic" but was later proven to be fake.

Origin

In June 2022, a video was taken from a White House pool report that showed U.S. President Joe Biden riding a bicycle near Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The video was originally posted to Twitter on June 18th, 2022, by Twitter[1] user jonboy79788314 who claimed his friend had taken it. Over the course of three days, the video received roughly 23.5 million views and 9,100 likes (shown below).

Additionally, the news outlet Reuters[2] provided a photograph of Biden on the ground post-bike accident (shown below, left). The Guardian also uploaded a full-length video of the accident and aftermath to YouTube on June 18th, earning 791,100 views in two days (shown below, right).

The video was later reposted by several other social media users on June 18th, 2022, including Twitter[3] user NikkiSchwab, who received roughly 7.7 million views and 1,900 likes in two days. Also, the gimmick account Crazy Ass Moments in American Politics reposted[4] the video that day, earning roughly 1.3 million views and 66,300 likes in two days (shown below).

Inspired by the aforementioned Twitter reposts, the video received multiple reactions and memes going into the days following. For instance, on June 18th, Twitter[5] user theranchgod posted a reply to ampol_moment that captioned a photo of LeBron James staring with, "Tucker Carlson seeing this before tonight’s show," earning roughly 6,400 likes in three days (shown below, left). Also on June 18th, Twitter[6] user bennyjohnson posted a photoshopped image of training wheels and Hello Kitty decals onto Biden's bike, earning roughly 18,800 likes in three days (shown below, right).

Memes were also uploaded to Facebook about the event. For instance, on June 18th, Facebook[7] user Frank Bojazi reposted a How It Started vs. How It's Going meme that earned roughly 3,300 reactions in three days (shown below, left). Additionally, on June 19th, the Facebook[8] page of GrrrGraphics.com posted a Ben Garrison political cartoon about the bike crash, earning roughly 1,400 reactions in three days (shown below, right).

On June 20th, 2022, Twitter[9] user NikkiSchwab posted a video recorded on June 18th of President Biden approaching the press at Gordon's Pond Beach to address the bike fall. Over the course of one day, the video received roughly 6,700 views and over 50 likes (shown below). Reportedly, the President did not suffer any injuries.

Donald Trump's Response

On June 20th, 2022, the Twitter[10] account of The Hill posted a video of former U.S. President Donald Trump reacting and responding to Biden falling off his bike during a speech given at the American Freedom Tour. Trump was quoted as saying, "I hope [Biden] has recovered, because as you know, he fell off his bicycle. No, I'm serious. I hope he's okay. Fell off a bicycle. I make this pledge to you today – I will never, ever ride a bicycle." The tweet received roughly 1.2 million views and 6,000 likes in less than a day (shown below).

Fake "The Atlantic" Headline Calling Biden's Bike Fall "Heroic"

On June 19th, 2022, Twitter[10] user kingbullyo tweeted a screenshot of a news headline from The Atlantic that read, "The Heroism of Biden's Bike Fall," and was paired with a subtitle reading, "The president gracefully illustrated an important lesson for all Americans – when we fall, we must get back up." Over the course of three days, the tweet received roughly 1,000 likes (shown below, left). Later in the day on June 19th, actor James Woods posted a tweet[11] (since-deleted) that also shared the screenshot and namedropped conservative, parody news outlet The Babylon Bee. The tweet received roughly 12,200 likes in three days before being deleted (shown below, right).

After the headline screenshot circulated on social media for a few days, the news outlet Reuters posted a fact-checking article[12] on June 21st, 2022, that labeled the screenshot as faked or altered. This prompted James Woods to delete his tweet.
