Jimmy Flipping Off Tracy refers to an artwork for the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V in which character Jimmy De Santa is showing a rude gesture to his sister Tracy while playing on his console. Released as a promotional image in July 2013, the image since appeared in a variety of memes, with items and posters in Jimmy's room often being replaced with fandom paraphernalia.

Origin

On July 4th, 2013, Rockstar Games released^[1] a promotional image for its then-upcoming video game Grand Theft Auto V in which character Jimmy De Santa flips off his sister Tracy, standing in the doorway of his room, while playing on his gaming console (image shown below).

On September 14th, 2013, Facebook^[2] page 4play posted the earliest found meme based on the artwork, replacing the posters in Jimmy's room with My Little Pony posters. The post (shown below) received over 9,300 reactions and 1,000 shares in ten years.

Spread

The image saw occasional use in memes through the 2010s: for example, on March 3rd, 2014, Know Your Meme^[3] user Jarl Balgruuf archived a Shrek version of the meme on the site (shown below, left). On May 4th, 2014, Facebook^[4] page I Love GTA posted a meme in which the image was paired with a Dexter's Laboratory fan art based on it created by an unknown artist (shown below, right).

The image regained popularity in 2022 after on August 9th, 2022, X^[5] user @tinywienerbabe captioned it, "baron trump sitting in his room like," referencing the FBI raid on Donald Trump's Florida home. The post received over 6,800 reposts and 101,300 likes prior to removal (shown below, left). On August 7th, 2022, Tumblr^[6] user jeekoftheweek posted an Azumanga Daioh edit that received over 3,100 likes and reblogs on the platform in two years (shown below, right).

Image saw further use both as reaction image and source material for edits in 2023.
