Jennette McCurdy Screams at Party Popper is a viral video of writer and former actress Jennette McCurdy screaming intensely after popping a party popper in celebration of her book, I'm Glad My Mom Died, staying on the New York Times bestseller list for 80 weeks. The video was uploaded in mid-May 2024 and went viral over the following days as people reacted to it and made memes using the scream, with some believing the scream was a trauma response.
Origin
On May 11th, 2024, writer Jennette McCurdy posted a video to her TikTok[1] page, @jennettemccurdy, in which she pops a party popper in celebration of her book, I'm Glad My Mom Died, spending 80 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. During the video, she says she hates loud noises then pops the party popper and screams loudly, covering her ears. The video gained over 20 million views in a day (shown below).
Spread
The video became the subject of memes and reactions over the following days, with many expressing shock over the intensity of the scream. On May 11th, 2024, X[2] account @PopCrave shared the video, garnering over 148,000 likes in two days.
On May 12th, TikToker[3] @stuffedbroadwaybaby posted a version of the video captioned, "me trying to open a can of Pillsbury cinnamon rolls," garnering over 6 million views in a day (shown below, left). That day, TikToker[4] @uhhhsure123 posted a reaction telling McCurdy that she didn't have to do that, garnering over 600,000 views in a day (shown below, right).
That same day, X[5] user @amazingmomo_ posted the clip of McCurdy screaming, writing, "jennette when Ariana came whistle-toning in with excitement because she had spent the previous evening playing charades at Tom Hanks’ house," referencing a story from McCurdy's book, garnering over 950 likes in a day (shown below, left).
Later that day, X[6] user @ayeejuju reposted the video, writing, "the scream?? 😭😭" garnering over 60,000 likes in a day. Some X[7] users hypothesized that the scream was a trauma response and was related to past traumas (examples shown below, right).
