Japan Is Literally Next Level is a copypasta in the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate community. The full text reads, "Japan is literally next level, I feel like all of their players are insane at optimizing their character's punish game." After a Twitter user used the text to complement a Japanese player's gameplay, others found the complement to be too hyperbolic, akin to the Place, Japan meme. They then humorously shared the text with clips of Japanese players making mistakes or using silly moves in the game.

Origin

On January 8th, 2022, Twitter user @Tru4Smash^[1] shared a clip of Dr. Mario player Paseriman taking a Fox player's stock, nearly without taking a hit himself. @Tru4Smash tweeted of the clip, "Japan is literally next level, I feel like all of their players are insane at optimizing their character's punish game" (shown below).

In the replies to and quote-tweets of the tweet, @Tru4Smash was mocked for the perceived hyperbole in his praise for Japan's Smash scene, as other players found the clip to be simply good gameplay and not worthy of praising an entire nation's gameplay.^[2][3] As the tweet spread, others began parodying it by posting more humorous clips of Japanese players making mistakes or spamming moves with the text as a copypasta. For example, the same day @Tru4Smash made their tweet, user @AzazeL_theGod posted a clip of Protobanham's Lucina getting a simple kill, gaining over 160 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, top). User @MrZercon posted the copypasta with an infamous Donkey Kong clip in the Smash community, gaining over 310 retweets and 3,000 likes (shown below, bottom).

The copypasta continued to be referenced throughout the following months. On May 5th, Twitter user ST_Vermillion used the clip to joke about a Japanese Luigi player who spams the character's down-b move before accidentally losing their stock without getting hit, gaining over 210 retweets and 3,700 likes (shown below, top). On June 12th, Twitter user @JustBlue4Ever used it to joke about top Japanese player Tea spamming Kazuya's Electric Wind God Fist in Loser's Finals, gaining over 220 retweets and 2,100 likes (shown below, bottom).
