About
Janet the Superhero refers to a child's drawing of a superhero she made at art camp. Janet is a green, monster-looking creature who "cuts people in half with giant scissors." After being posted online by the child's mother, the character went viral and inspired fan art.
Origin
On August 7th, 2017, Twitter user @Manda_like_wine,[1] aka Amanda Williams, tweeted a photo of her child Luca's drawing of Janet. According to the caption of the image, "Janet cuts people in half with giant scissors. She is a hero only to herself." The tweet gained over 16,000 retweets and 56,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
After the tweet went viral, several Twitter users fell in love with the character, particularly after an exchange in which Williams explained that the giant stick featured in the image is "a twig that she smacks the jerks down with."[2] Shortly after the initial tweet, Twitter users began replying to Williams with pieces of fan art they drew in tribute to Janet. The first appears to be @domofudge,[3] whose tweet gained over 150 retweets (shown below, left). Another popular piece of fan art, posted by @CreativeGrenade,[4] displayed a logo for Janet, gaining 30 retweets (shown below, right). Two days after Williams' tweet, Cosmopolitan[5] published an article in which they interviewed Williams. Select All[6] also posted an article about the response to Janet.
