About
JaNee Nisonger's "Old Fashioned" Video refers to a clip of Mahalo.com video series host JaNee Nisonger creating an "Old Fashioned" whiskey cocktail that went viral in the Spring of 2019 due to the poor technique used to create the drink.
Origin
The original video, which appeared in a series for Mahalo.com, has since been deleted. It was posted November 1st, 2010.[1] On July 28th, 2018, YouTuber The One Great X reuploaded the video (shown below).
Spread
Prior to gaining viral attention in the Spring of 2019, the video saw some ridicule and parody. On June 2nd, 2014, it was covered by The Pegu Blog,[2] where author Doug Winship sarcastically detailed what he'd "learned" in the video:
Either sugar cubes or simple syrup will make a drink sweeter than the other one will. Which one, I didn’t catch.
Using simple syrup instead of sugar cubes will make your finished drink “more liquidy”.
Use “orange slice wedges”. More on this in a bit.
Professional bartenders should use huge wooden spoons to muddle with.
Be sure to use the special invisible Angostura Bitters that cannot be seen coming out of the bottle, even in extreme closeup.
Use a glass as your ice scoop.
“Three ounces” of bourbon will completely fill a pint glass.
In other news, serve your Old-Fashioneds in pint glasses! (Perhaps you should also have this website engraved on the inside bottom of the glass)
An Old-Fashioned is kind of like a Manhattan, but the orange makes it even better.
To mix your Old-Fashioned, pour it back and forth between your pint glass serving vessel and your glass ice scoop which, by the way, isn’t large enough to hold it all. This allows you to make the required “messes all over the place”.
Your finished drink should not fill your glass anymore, making it look like the bartender took a hearty slug or three for themselves before handing it over.
On April 4th, 2018, YouTuber penguinz0 posted a video mocking the original video, gaining over 1.9 million views (shown below).
The video began seeing widespread reaction following a May 30th, 2019 tweet of the clip by @turing_police that gained over 7,100 retweets and 34,000 likes (shown below).
The clip prompted several strong reactions from Twitter users who focused on how mistakenly alcoholic Nisonger made the beverage, adding what appeared to be a pint of bourbon when the recipe called for "three ounces." User @xoxogossipgita[3] pointed this out in a tweet that gained over 40 retweets and 320 likes (shown below, left). User @ReformedBroker[4] wrote "This is greatest thing I’ve ever seen in my life," gaining over 170 retweets and 1,200 likes. Reactions to the video were covered by Daily Dot,[5] Business Insider,[6] and Inquisitr.[7]
