Jane Doe is a playable Agent character in the 2024 action role-playing gacha game Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ). A Thiren criminal behavior specialist with rat features, Jane Doe became a prominent subject of memes, fan art and hornyposting in the game's community in late August 2024.

Origin

On July 4th, 2024, the action role-playing gacha game Zenless Zone Zero, developed and published by Chinese company miHoYo, was released. In the release trailer of the video game, published on the same day, the character Jane Doe appears.^[1]

On July 12th, Jane Doe was announced^[2] as an upcoming playable agent for ZZZ (character portrait shown below).

On August 14th, 2024, version 1.1 of the game was released,^[2] featuring Undercover R&B special episode with Jane Doe as a playable character. On September 3rd, "Deadly Interrogation," the introduction trailer for the character, premiered, garnering over 5.4 million views on YouTube^[3] in three months (shown below).

On September 4th, 2024, Jane Doe was made available for unlocking via a Signal Search, the game's gacha mechanic.^[2]

In Zenless Zone Zero, Jane Doe is a playable S-Class Physical Agent who is a member of the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team. Jane Doe is a female Thiren, a member of humanoid species with animal features — in case of Jane Doe, rat features, which include a whip-like tail and distinctive ears.

The character's name, "Jane Doe" is a placeholder name for female individuals used in the British and American legal systems.

Following the release of the game in July 2024, Jane Doe saw some presence in fan art, with the character's popularity experiencing a surge following her addition as a playable agent in version 1.1 of the game.

On July 19th, 2024, artist and X user @JoJoWentBananas posted an I Know He Ate a Cheese humorous artwork of Jane Doe (shown below), which garnered over 280 reposts and 1,000 likes on X^[4] in four months, one of the earliest notable memes featuring the character.

On August 18th, 2024, following the release of version 1.1 of Zenless Zone Zero, X^[5] user @Saruei_ posted a cosplay of the character that received over 17,000 reposts and 208,000 likes on X in three months (shown below).

In the following months, the character achieved massive popularity in fan art, with multiple artworks of Jane Doe, including those based on memes, going viral online.

For example, on September 22nd, 2024, the artist and X user @FunkiFlame posted a humorous fan art referencing the KFC Deep Fried Rat meme, which received over 2,600 reposts and 37,000 likes on X^[6] in two months (shown below).
