About
James Charles "Womp Womp Womp Yeah Yeah Yeah," also written Whomp Whomp Whomp or Woop Woop Woop, refers to a viral video of James Charles singing along to the song "Taste" by Tyga with his own vocals during a Snapchat Story posted in early 2019. Many online found his singing off-putting, cringe and overall, hilarious. It became the subject of many "Stan Twitter" memes and it was recreated and impersonated in many TikTok videos throughout the early 2020s.
Origin
On February 7th, 2019, James Charles posted a Snapchat Story that showed him in the backseat of a limousine singing along to the song, "Taste" by Tyga.[1] Additionally, Charles wrote in text overlay, "Quitting makeup to become Tyga's background singer." The Snap Story was screen-recorded and reposted to YouTube[2] on February 8th by the channel Egg Ed and over the course of three years, it received roughly 3.1 million views and 76,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
After Charles' fans watched his Snapchat story, they took to social media to post content about it. For instance, on February 8th, 2019, Twitter[3] user legallyines referenced the sounds Charles was making in a tweet that received over 350 likes in three years (shown below, top). Also on February 8th, Twitter[4] user grapejuicesbIue captioned a video of Matt Bomer with, "Me every time I see James Charles singing," earning over 100 likes in three years (shown below, bottom).
The video circulated on social media en masse and by the end of February 2019, Charles was aware of the satirical backlash. On February 22nd, 2019, Charles posted a tweet[5] reading, "whoomp whoomp whoomp whoomp whoomp whoomp heyeeyayeeeyeah heyeeyayeeeyeah," receiving roughly 154,400 likes over the course of three years (shown below).
On March 22nd, 2019, Charles recreated his viral video during one of his makeup tutorials. Starting at the 21:54-minute mark he says, "'W' is for, 'Womp Womp Womp…" Over the course of three years, the video received roughly 20.3 million views (shown below, left). On April 24th, 2019, the YouTube channel Acadia Dellinger posted an eight-second long video of just the aforementioned recreation, earning roughly 858,900 views over the course of three years (shown below, right).
Continuing into the 2020s, both videos of Charles singing his vocals earned video re-mixes, re-edits and YouTube Poop style content on TikTok, YouTube and Twitter predominantly. For instance, on April 27th, 2021, the YouTube channel The Queen posted a video of the "Whomp Whomp Whomp (Official Music Video)," earning 5,000 views in one year (shown below).
