About

It's Tombstone For You Lil' Homie or Your Career Is RIP refers to a viral video of rapper Bow Wow standing amongst his homies responding to a diss track by Soulja Boy uploaded to Myspace in 2009 in which Bow Wow threatens Soulja Boy a number of times and says Soulja owes his success to Bow Wow. The video saw a resurgence in popularity in 2021 on YouTube and TikTok, inspiring a popular sound on the latter in late June and early July.

Origin

Rappers Bow Wow and Soulja Boy have a longstanding history of feuds, detailed by Complex[1] in a May 2021 piece. In December 2008, Soulja Boy said that rapper Nas "killed hip-hop" in a video posted to World Star Hip-Hop (shown below, reuploaded to YouTube).

In January 2009, Bow Wow freestyle rapped over a track and responded to Soulja's claims, dissing him (shown below).

In response, Soulja challenged Bow Wow to a race in a video flexing his Lamborghini (shown below, left). In response, Bow Wow posted a video in his orange Lambo making fun of Soulja's, saying he could fit Soulja's whole career in his back rim (shown below, right).

On February 6th, 2009, Soulja Boy released a diss track titled "Fuck Bow Wow" featuring lyrics that claim Bow Wow's Lambo is rented and repeat the line "fuck Bow Wow" (shown below).

That day, Bow Wow responded to Soulja with a video standing around his homies in which he disses Soulja, saying he's "done," his career is "RIP," and that it's "tombstone" for Soulja (shown below). He also brings up the Nas comment again and refutes claims that he made Soulja with their 2008 collab on "Marco Polo."[4] The response video notably features a number of sound effects edited in throughout when Bow Wow makes a threat or bold claim.

It's tombstone for you, lil' homie. We all gonna lay roses on your coffin, because your career is R.I.P. Done. You're over.

Spread

On May 30th, 2021, TikToker[2] @i.8.a_burrito posted a video to TikTok using the clip of Bow Wow saying "It's tombstone for you lil' homie" to Soulja, with Bow Wow and each member of his crew labeled, and a top caption reading, "Pov you call BTS trash," gaining over 1.4 million views in a month (shown below).

The original sound became notably popular over the course of June, resulting in a number of popular videos mimicking its style. For example, on June 20th, TikToker[3] @max.larsen posted a video using a clone effect labeled "POV: you say cheer isn't a sport" featuring three labeled versions of himself dancing over the sound, garnering over 825,000 views in a month (shown below).
