About

"It's Still Shitposting Even If You Are Being Ironic" is an expression used to discourage the act of intentional shitposting, or sharing worthless content on purpose, on the imageboard site 4chan. The phrase is usually accompanied by an illustration of the Touhou Project character Keine Kamishirasawa.

Origin

On May 27th, 2011, one of the earliest known comments on record to take a critical tone against "ironic shitposting" was posted on /jp/ (Otaku culture) board[2] in response to a poorly written fanfiction involving the popular Japanese cosplay model Lenfried.

Are you pretending to be Japanese or something? It is still shitposting even if you are being ironic, you know.

On Shitposting

The term "shitpost" was initially used to describe contributions that are of exceptionally low quality. However, as a culture of dislike towards Reddit and other memetic hubs began to take hold among elitist users on 4chan, many began to take on "shitposting" as a challenge in the spirit of trolling, leading to rampant overuse of emoticons such as xD and words like le. Soon, shitposts and ironic shitposts increasingly became less discernible and prompted oldfags to raise concerns with the trend.

Spread

As the sentiment against ironic shitposting continued to spread on 4chan[3], the phrase "it's still shitposting even if you're being ironic" became adopted into several image macros featuring the Touhou character Keine Kamishirasawa.[2] By late September 2010, the expression began to appear in the comments on Reddit[4][5]]6][7] as well.

Notable Examples

Derivatives

In 2012, the image macro rose to prominence with many derivative instances, such as "sarcastic shitposting is still shitposting."
