About

"It's Finally a Friday" is an exploitable image based on a dialogue from the Japanese manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Notable for its awkward and dramatic manner in which the characters celebrate the end of a work week, the three-pane cut is usually edited with custom caption to convey relief at the end of a long wait for a highly anticipated event. In late 2010s, the meme gained association with Yakuza Disco Minigame memes.

Origin

The original image (pictured below, left) comes from a page in Chapter 179 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders[1] (shown below, right), where the characters Jotaro Kujo, Joseph Joestar, Jean Pierre Polnareff, Noriaki Kakyoin and Mohammed Avdol arrive near Egypt after a long journey from Japan and many hostile encounters with enemies.

Outside of Japan, the earliest known appearance of the image can be traced back to a Tumblr-hotlinked instance posted by NeoGAF forum member Ezlac on April 4th, 2014, the day when the pilot episode of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure TV_ anime adaptation premiered.[2]

Spread

On September 4th, 2014, the quote was listed on TV Tropes'[4] Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Memes page. The next day, shortly after the airing the episode featuring the "Friday" dialogue, Tumblr[5] blogger Seviper uploaded a collection of GIFs from the scene in anime adaptation. Within eight months, the post received over 19,753 notes. On October 1st, Tumblr user Sassybang[6] uploaded an edited version of the comic in enthusiasm for the upcoming release of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. As of May 2015, the post has accrued around 6,596 notes[6].

Yakuza Disco Minigame

Yakuza Disco Minigame refers to a dancing minigame in the 2015 video game Yakuza 0. Following the release of the game, the clips of main protagonist Kazuma Kiryu dancing, particularly those in which he dances with characters Nishiki and Goro Majima, gained popularity online as reactions and in edits, with the disco song "Friday Night" becoming a popular reference among the game audience. Memes are sometimes combined with the characters exchanging dialogue about it finally being a Friday night, an homage to It's Finally a Friday.
