It Was Too Big To Be Called A Sword, also known as the Guts Copypasta, is a copypasta meme from the manga and anime series Berserk referencing the description of the protagonist Guts' sword, "The Dragonslayer," which became popularized online due to the word choice and how long the sword is. Online, this description of the sword was used as a joke similar to Hentai quotes in which it would be attributed to other things besides a sword, often by replacing "sword" in the original text.

Origin

In chapter one of the manga Berserk, the character Guts is seen using the sword in a bar fight. The character Puck is the first to give this description to the sword, claiming "It Was Much Too Big To Be Called A Sword." The description, spread across two panels, would be repeated as a reference to the sword throughout the story (shown below).

The phrase would be used sporadically as Berserk became more prominent online, with the excerpt remaining one of the most referenced pieces from the manga. On August 11th, 2014, an anonymous^[1] user on the /vg/ board of 4chan would be the first to use the phrase in a meme, with it being used as part of a This Is Bait meme, claiming that the post was immensely large bait (shown below).

The quote continued to see usage as a reference in the following years, with varying levels of Photoshop and redrawing done to enhance the reference. For example, on October 20th, 2015, an anonymous^[2] Imgur user uploaded an Undertale version of the meme in which Guts is replacing Sans and the Dragonslayer is just a large bone, showing Frisk in place of a child (shown below).
