It Don't Matter. None of This Matters refers to a memorable remark said by the Aqua Teen Hunger Force character Carl during a wedding on the show. Online, image macros and other memes based on the catchphrase have been spread since 2015, with the phrase often being used to convey nihilism.

Origin

On December 22nd, 2002, episode 17 of season 1 of the animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force premiered on Adult Swim.^[1] In the episode, characters Carl Brutananadilewski and Shake are in a wedding ceremony with their mail-order bride. When the character Frylock is unable to pronounce Carl's last name, he apathetically comments, "Just say Smith too, it don't matter. None of this matters." On May 21st, 2015, YouTube^[2] user Darrell Vermilion uploaded the scene, with the upload accumulating over 272,000 views in nine years (shown below).

The catchphrase has been used as source material for image macros at least since 2014. On April 24th, 2014, X^[3] / Twitter user @CraigHlvavaty posted the earliest discovered image macro based on the scene (shown below).

Spread

Starting in 2015, multiple image macros, including those based on fan art of the character, were posted on 4chan, being used as reaction images (examples shown below).^[4]^[5] Notably, an image of Carl superimposed over an image of a galaxy captioned with the quote saw particular popularity (shown below, left).

On September 15th, 2020, X^[6] / Twitter user @Regaulity posted an image in which Carl was edited next to Asuka and Rei into the Evangelion Elevator image. The post, captioned with Carl's quote, garnered over 12,000 reposts and 48,000 likes in three years (shown below).

The post was followed by an increase in the prevalence of the catchphrase online, with it being used as a part of reaction images and other memes in the 2020s.
