On March 17th, 2020, Irish writer Séamas O'Reilly (@shockproofbeats) posted several photographs of his infant son in an X[1] / Twitter thread. In one of the photographs, O'Reilly's son sits next to a glass of Guinness stout beer, touching it with his hand and looking disappointed. The post (shown below) garnered over 2,000 reposts and quotes and 20,000 likes on X in four years.

On February 18th, 2024, O'Reilly posted a recreated photograph with his now older son holding a glass of beer. The post (shown below) gained over 160 reposts and 5,100 likes on X[2] in one day.

Spread

Starting on February 18th, 2024, users on X[3] / Twitter quoted the 2020 photograph with humorous captions referencing Ireland and Irish culture. On that day, X user @Goldxn_Violin posted a meme referencing the 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin that received over 4,300 reposts and 75,000 likes on X in one day (shown below).

Later that day, X[4] user @teaandrobots captioned the photograph, "this baby can list every English war crime from memory," with the post gaining over 1,500 reposts and 22,000 likes in one day (shown below).

More caption memes based on the photograph were posted on X / Twitter over the following days.
