Indian Guy on YouTube refers to a series of memes that praise a generalized version of a YouTube educational channel run by a person from India. This trend, spawned by a large amount of various educational guides uploaded to YouTube by Indian users, resulted in numerous memes and first gained popularity in late 2019.

Origin

On November 24th, 2018, the Facebook[1] page Science Memes posted the earliest found meme about Indian YouTubers providing a helpful service by assisting students in understanding school subjects (shown below). The post, submitted by Facebook user Monis Ali, received over 8,000 likes and 2,000 shares in two years.

The image received moderate spread online in the following months, for example, on April 8th, 2019, the Facebook[2] page I love Mathematics reposted the meme, with the post gaining over 1,900 likes and 600 reactions in two years.

Memes about the "Indian guy on YouTube" did not see viral spread until August 1st, 2019, when an unknown user posted an Avengers: Endgame version of the meme to the Marvel Shieldposting Facebook group (original post could not be discovered, repost shown below). On August 1st, 2019, Facebook[3] page Educational Memes reposted the meme, with the post gaining over 11,000 reactions and 8,900 shares in two years. An August 5th, 2019, repost in the /r/wholesomememes[4] subreddit later received over 47,400 upvotes in the same period.

Spread

In the following months, memes praising the "Indian guy on YouTube" achieved notable spread online, particularly on Reddit and Facebook. On August 3rd, 2019, the Facebook[5] page The Egyptian Entertainment posted a meme that received over 6,400 reactions and 2,900 shares in two years (shown below, left). On August 29th, an unknown Redditor posted a meme that gained over 5,200 upvotes in /r/Animemes[6] in six months (shown below, center). On September 25th, 2019, Redditor DuccBro posted a Mercy Offers a Hand meme that received over 33,600 upvotes in /r/memes[7] in six months (shown below, right).

In the following years, memes praising the "Indian guy on YouTube" and comparing him positively against school teachers and school education, in general, maintained moderate popularity online, primarily in the form of object-labeling and comparison memes.
