Increasingly Buff SpongeBob refers to a group of multi-panel exploitables showing images of character SpongeBob from SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon with different amounts of muscle mass. Starting in February 2019, the format has been used to illustrate the changing level of power and aggression in certain individuals in a similar fashion to Mafia City memes.

Origin

On February 8th, Redditor TrentonTallywacker posted a two-panel meme based on two still images from SpongeBob SquarePants episodes "Not Normal"[1] (left) and "The Fry Cook Games"[2] (right) to /r/historymemes subreddit. The post received over 49,700 upvotes in five days.

Spread

In the following days, more posts based on the format appeared in /r/dankmemes[4], /r/historymemes[5] and on Instagram[6], with one popular post by user byzantine_memes gaining over 52,500 upvotes in two days (shown below).



On February 11th, Redditor[7] j_aus posted a three-panel version of the meme with another image from the "The Fry Cook Games"[2] episode added to /r/dankmemes subreddit. The post gained over 8,300 upvotes in three days.



In the following days more posts utilizing the three-panel format appeared on various subreddits. In some examples, positions of the images and text were swapped.
