In the Heights Identity refers to a series of TikTok remixes in which users attempted to label their own identity to the song "Carnaval Del Barrio" from the musical In the Heights by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Origin
On July 23rd, 2005, the musical In the Heights premiered which featured a musical number called "Carnaval Del Barrio" (shown below). The song was uploaded to TikTok in 2019 and in June of 2019 a sound clip of character Carla discussing her parentage spawned remixes in which TikTok users revealed portions of their own identity.
Spread
In June 2019, @sad.jaden uploaded a video describing himself as Asian and black which gained over 369,000 likes that month but has since been taken down. On June 7th, @realliamsilk posted a video describing her parents heritage (shown below, left). The video gained over 340,600 likes and 5,100 shares in 12 days. On June 9th, TikTok user @lifewhb uploaded a video describing himself as white (shown below, right). The video gained over 347,000 likes and 7,900 shares in ten days.
On June 18th, The musical's creator Lin_Manuel Miranda[1][2] found out about the trend through Twitter (shown below,left). After they were sent a TikTok exampled they responded by saying, "Haa I love it" (shown below, right). The tweet accumulated over 1,100 likes in a day.
