About

In My Solitude refers to the song "Solitude" by Billie Holiday on TikTok. Throughout the 2020s, the song became popular on TikTok in aesthetic videos that give off a calming vibe, including videos of desirable landscapes, objects and views. In October 2022, a TikToker sang the lyrics to describe the aesthetic appeal of a pair of boots in a video known as "Hold On, 'Cause They Got The Goddamn 'In My Solitude,'" comparing the boots to the song, sparking a trend where people use the audio in aesthetic videos and the lyrics as a slang term to describe things, often cars or boots, in a similar way, often ironically. The trend is a play on shoe roast videos made by creator Slv_Soundss.

Origin

Throughout the 2020s, especially in 2022, TikTokers[1] began using the song "Solitude" by Billie Holiday in videos that give off a specific, desirable aesthetic and calming vibe. Often, the videos show luxurious locations, landscapes, delicious food, plants and otherwise calming and aesthetically pleasing scenes. Sometimes, the song is used in videos about being alone (examples shown below).

Hold On, 'Cause They Got The Goddamn 'In My Solitude'

On September 28th, 2022, TikToker[2] @realrally posted a video where he's shopping. He points the camera at a pair of slip-on winter boots, saying, "Hold on, 'cause they got the goddamn," then sings, "in my solitude," in the style of Holiday, garnering over 4.1 million views in three weeks (shown below, left). On October 1st, TIkToker[3] @bj.rowlingg posted a video where @realrally's video plays, followed by a compilation with an aesthetic similar to other "Solitude" videos, garnering over 1.2 million views in three weeks (shown below, right).

Spread

The original sound for @bj.rowlingg's video was used over 5,200 times on TikTok between October 1st and the 20th, 2022. The most popular videos use it in aesthetic and ironic aesthetic edits and compilations, where @realrally says the line and points to the boots, followed by a cut to something aesthetic or nonsensical. In many videos, the TikToker pans to someone wearing aesthetically pleasing boots over the audio. On October 15th, 2022, TikToker[4] @goaturmom.com posted a video where he pans to someone drinking milk, garnering over 2.7 million views in five days (shown below, left). On October 18th, TikToker[5] @964jasper posted a video of a nice car to the audio, garnering over 9.3 million views in two days (shown below, right).

The use of the phrase became more ironic and nonsensical as the trend spread. On October 18th, TikToker[6] @nathaniellaboy101 posted a video where he looks at the veins in his arms and says, "Damn, I got nice ass veins, they for real be like, 'in my solitude," garnering over 5.1 million views in two days (shown below). The original sound for his video was used over 150 times in the next two days in copycat videos.
