Impressed Mudskippers is an image macro of two mudskippers laying side by side with their mouths open wide looking at a third mudskipper that is jumping from a hole. Although the image was first introduced online in a Reddit Photoshop battle in August 2020, the image quickly became an object-labeling meme on the platform. Typically in memes, the two mudskippers with their mouths open depicted as being impressed or yelling at the jumping mudskipper.

Origin

On August 13th, 2020, Redditor S2keepup posted the original image to r/photohopbattles^[1] and received over 33,400 points (97% upvoted) and 440 comments in three days (shown below). The same Redditor also posted the image shortly after to r/pics ^[2]and garnered over 270 points (97% upvoted) in three days.

Precursor

Various images of mudskippers have been previously posted online due to their strange appearance and some have been used in caption contests (shown below).^[3][4]

Spread

On August 13th, 2020, Redditor Gnarly_Starwin submitted an edit to the original r/photoshopbattles post and gained over 1,200 points in three days (shown below, left). That same day, SammiesHammies reposted the original image to r/memeeconomy^[5] and accumulated over 10,700 points (98% upvoted) in three days. That same day, Redditor eock_8 posted an object-labeling meme using the image to r/dankmemes.^[6] The image labeled the jumping mudskipper as "the fastest kid in 5th grade" and the others as "all the girls" (shown below, right). The post acquired over 15,400 points (98% upvoted) in three days.

The next day, Redditor Nymenos posted another object-labeling example about having an imaginary argument in the shower to r/me_irl^[7] (shown below). The post garnered over 1,800 points (98% upvoted) in two days. StayHipp^[8] published an article on mudskipper memes.
