About

I'm Thirsty, Refreshing is a clip from Teen Titans GO! when the DC Comics character Raven says, "I'm thirsty," in a hospital bed and then transforms into a goldfish in a fish bowl to say, "Refreshing." The clip became a TikTok sound and trend in mid-2022 when creators dumped and poured excessive amounts of water, or other liquids, onto themselves while laying down, correlating with the monotone words being said in lip-dub skits.

Origin

The clip of Raven saying she's thirsty comes from season three, episode 14 of the Teen Titans spin-off show Teen Titans GO!, titled "Animals, It's Just a Word!"[1] In the episode, Beast Boy accidentally kills the Titans with Cyborg's laser cannon, however, he saves them in the hospital when he puts his blood in them. Therefore, they all obtain the ability to transform into animals and act like animals due to Beast Boy's superpower.

After learning she can turn into an animal, Raven states, "I'm thirsty," and then transforms into a goldfish. She plops herself in a fish bowl filled with water and then claims that it's "refreshing." The hospital scene from the episode was uploaded to YouTube[2] on November 14th, 2015, by YouTuber Daniel Diaz, earning roughly 25.2 million views in seven years. At the 0:53-minute mark, Raven states, "I'm thirsty" (shown below).

On February 20th, 2022, TikToker[3] kingmartin_cyn.v2 posted the five-second clip, earning roughly 7.7 million plays and 804,700 likes in five months (shown below, left). The mass engagement of their TikTok was primarily fueled by the sound[4] being used by multiple creators. This started with a video posted on June 11th, 2022, by TikToker[5] sickcherry who used it to make a joke about drinking "moldy spray water" in the middle of the night. Their video received roughly 1.5 million plays and 234,000 likes in one month (shown below, right).

Spread

In June 2022 amid the sound's early usage, more TikTokers made jokes about drinking water late at night, however, the second-known TikToker to use the sound was britneyforprez[6] on June 14th, who joked about enjoying too much soy sauce when eating sushi. he received roughly 527,600 plays and 48,700 likes in one month.

On June 25th, 2022, TikToker[7] thefunplush used the sound in a video that showed him hosing down his plush Mario toy, earning roughly 709,800 plays and 70,700 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On June 28th, TikToker[8] lunarexicaa posted a video that showed her pouring sink water on a picture of herself, earning roughly 105,600 plays and 23,000 likes in two weeks (shown below, right).

The two aforementioned videos were the first to use the sound and pour excessive water on an object. Lunarexicaa's TikTok[8] specifically started a trend[9] of users dumping water on printed photos of themselves.

Most likely inspired by the dumping water on photos trend, TikToker[10] eb__spam posted a video on July 2nd, 2022, that showed her laying on the ground while her friends dumped a bucket of water on her. Her video received roughly 1.7 million plays and 264,300 likes in two weeks (shown below).

Eb__spam's TikTok[10] then inspired more creators to film themselves laying down on the ground and getting water poured on them when Raven states, "I'm thirsty." By July 15th, 2022, the sound[4] amassed roughly 193,300 videos using it with the majority of them showing people getting excessive amounts of water dumped onto them.
