I'm So Happy, I'm So Sad refers to a viral clip of Mari from the mobile game Love Live! School Idol Festival ALL STARS saying "I'm so happy!" and smiling then "I'm so sad" with a sunken head, one after the other. The clip was uploaded to TikTok in early October 2021 and its Original Sound went viral in lip-dub skits over the course of the month leading into November, mainly used to describe or illustrate moments of joy quickly proceeded by moments of worry or sadness.
Origin
On October 1st, 2021, TikToker @trixisyeh posted a clip from the mobile action-rhythm video game Love Live! School Idol Festival ALL STARS where the character Mari Ohara[1] is seen standing in a classroom in a schoolgirl outfit. The player taps her body and she says "I'm so happy," smiling and shooting a finger gun at the player. There's a pause, then the player taps her again and she says, "I'm so sad," lowering her head (shown below). The clip gained over 2.7 million views in a month.
Spread
Throughout October, TikTokers[4][5] used the Original Sound from @trixisyeh's video in lip-dub skits and videos describing or showing something happy, followed by something sad or contrasting the original feeling (examples shown below, left and right).
On October 13th a full, high-quality version of the original clip was uploaded to YouTube, gaining over 25,000 views in three weeks (shown below).
On October 21st, TikToker[6] @lammysee posted a video of someone riding around the road in a small toy car over the "I'm so happy" sound followed by them being chased by the police over the "I'm so sad" dialogue, gaining over 11.9 million views in two weeks (shown below).
