I'm Looking for A Man in Finance refers to a song and viral challenge on TikTok that started with a vocal spoken word performance by content creator @girl_on_couch, which other creators then paired with backing tracks, drums and other musical elements. The song and challenge gained virality in the spring of 2024.
Origin
TikToker @girl_on_couch posted the original video (seen below) on May 1st, 2024.[1] It depicted her speaking in a British accent in a musical cadence and was captioned, "Did I just write the song of the summer?" The post received over one million likes and 12 million views in the course of one week.

Spread
Shortly after the initial @girl_on_couch posting, DJs and music producers on TikTok added beats to the vocals. For example, @rubythepookie on May 2nd posted the version of the song seen below left, which earned over 250,000 views and 6,870 likes over the course of six days and was then widely used in remixes and later memes.[2] @djhunnybee posted the version seen below right which earned over 670,000 likes and 5.2 million views over the course of five days.[3]
Other DJs added lyrics to the song, including @malibubabie who earned over 1.5 million views and 88,000 likes in five days for the May 2nd post (seen below left).[4] Another prominent remix of the song was posted by @vandelux on May 2nd (seen below right) and earned over 2.1 million views and 189,000 likes.[5]
Other posters began to make parodies of the song. @madihartsoccer (seen below, left) daughter of the Breakdancing Dad created a parody post on May 7th about her desire for a man was "5' 9" and "not therapized," which received over 15,000 views and 1,500 likes in a day.[7] The Celestial Seasonings brand account created a post on May 7th altering the lyrics to describe their mascot, the Sleepytime Bear (seen below, right).[8] The post received 63 likes and nearly 500 views in a day.
Additional parodies included changes to the lyrics like those made by @honidon who got over 439,000 views and 71,000 likes in three weeks for a May 6th post about "looking for a presidential candidate. Under 65. No scammy lies or supporting genocide" (shown below, left).[9] @somedumbbih created a parody of the sound on May 25th, stating that she was "looking for a man in a skatepark. No job. Mustache. Mullet," earning over 1.1 million views and 186,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).[10]
The song was discussed on other platforms as well. On X, user @fabianstelzer posted a compilation of videos participating in the trend on May 7th, 2024, earning over 4,200 likes in 18 hours for the post (seen below), which described the trend as a "community controlnet," referencing an AI process for generating content.[6]
Release of Official Song
On May 16th, 2024, TikToker @girl_on_couch released an official version of the song to all platforms, advertising it with a TikTok (seen below, left) that earned over 1.3 million views and 47,600 likes in two weeks.[11]
In the comments of the post, users debated whether the @vandelux version of the song[5] was better than the one chosen for the single. This official release came after she posted a video on May 8th singing about the difficulty of "making a single penny" off the viral moment, earning over 12,500 likes and 722,000 views in three weeks (seen below, right).[12]
Later, a May 25th promotional post by @girl_on_couch for Tubi incorporating quotes from the viral song was met with enthusiasm by fans in the comments (seen below) congratulating her for "getting that bag."[13]
