About
I’m Light as a Feather. I’m the Bake-O-Lite Girl refers to a scene from the stop motion animated film Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death in which the character Piella Bakewell is flying in a hot air balloon and singing the aforementioned jingle for a commercial about the imaginary brand Bake-O-Lite in which she is the "Bake-O-Lite Girl." The scene became a meme on TikTok late 2023 where many video creators added text captions to the scene as well as to another scene from later in the movie in which Bakewell is much older and her balloon is sinking. Overall, the meme became well-known within FlopTok meme circles and a majority of the captions were related to feeling skinny.
Origin
In 2008, the short film Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death was released in the United Kingdom.[1] At one point in the movie, the antagonist character Piella Bakewell is shown in a commercial from the past where she is the "Bake-O-Lite Girl." She's seen in a hot air balloon, singing the brand's jingle, "I'm light as a feather. I'm the Bake-O-Lite Girl." Also, in a later scene of the film, there's a callback to Bakewell's days as the Bake-O-Lite girl in which she's in a hot air balloon that's sinking while saying the jingle in a delusional way.
The first known piece of memetic content to use either scene was a Smash Bros. edit of Bakewell's latter scene, uploaded by YouTuber[2] Ross on October 17th, 2019, gaining over 32,100 views in four years (shown below).
Despite one piece of content from 2019, the scene didn't become a predominant meme trend until 2023. The trend started with a video posted by TikToker[3] @chickennuggets.ontheside on September 17th, 2023, who captioned it, "How I feel after taking the biggest shit in the world at 1:49am," gaining roughly 414,700 plays and 43,700 likes in nine days (shown below).
Spread
Following TikToker[3] @chickennuggets.ontheside's video in mid-September 2023, many meme creators on TikTok followed the format, adding their own captions to the video over the following weeks.
For instance, on September 19th, 2023, TikToker[4] @kenkaleidoscope wrote, "Am I the only one with an unhealthy obsession with this bread woman?" gaining roughly 219,000 plays and 21,400 likes in one week (shown below, left). On September 20th, TikToker[5] @xheyqueenx posted the video, adding a caption about calling people fat on Roblox, receiving roughly 773,200 plays and 228,300 likes in six days (shown below, right).
Going into late September 2023, meme creators also started to use the latter scene in the film in which Piella Bakewell's balloon is sinking into a zoo, such as TikToker[6] @fat_ninja12345 on September 24th, 2023, who captioned it, "I'm as delusional as her tbh," gaining roughly 288,800 plays and 53,600 likes in two days (shown below).
