About

I'm Doing It, Are You? refers to a text message and selfie sent by Ginny & Georgia character Marcus Baker (played by Felix Mallard) in which it's inferred that he's pleasuring himself. The screencap of Ginny's phone after receiving the iMessage gained meme attention in late 2023 and early 2024. At first, the memes remained within the Ginny & Georgia fandom but later spread outside it, moving to memes on TikTok and exploitable usage elsewhere.

Origin

On February 24th, 2021, season 1, episode 4 of Ginny & Georgia titled "Lydia Bennett Is Hundo a Feminist" was released on Netflix. In one scene, Ginny Miller (played by Antonia Gentry) is texting Marcus Baker (played by Felix Mallard) who is coaxing her into touching herself with him. Marcus sends her a selfie and a message reading, "I'm doing it, are you?" (screencap shown below).[1]

On March 2nd, TikToker[2] @_moviesand_shows_ posted a recording of the scene, asking, "so are we going to talk about this?" The video gained over 189,900 plays and 31,300 likes in three years (shown below).

Spread

About a year later, on March 28th, 2022, TikToker[3] @tr0ncat33 posted the scene with "NAHHHH" written in all caps, receiving over 1 million plays and 26,300 likes in two years (shown below).

On December 24th, 2023, X[4] user @normalgirl53 quoted her own tweet about e-sex with the screencap of Marcus' text, writing, "this is how i imagine esex is like." Over six months, the quote received roughly 66,000 likes (shown below, left).

Later on December 24th, X[5] user @miiffygirl replied to the aforementioned tweet, "he looks like he’s dead in a casket," gaining over 6,200 likes in six months. Then, on December 29th, X[6] user @NINT3NDHOE tweeted an almost identical "cakset" joke in a separate tweet, gaining over 9,300 likes in six months (shown below, right).

On December 30th, 2023, a Redditor[7] screenshotted @NINT3NDHOE's tweet and posted it to the /r/ginnyandgeorgiashow subreddit, gaining over 3,300 upvotes in six months.

In 2024, the meme spread on TikTok as people made fancam edits for other men using the "I'm Doing It, Are You?" template. For instance, on June 1st, 2024, TikToker[8] @fqntyy posted a fan edit of influencer Matt Sturniolo, gaining over 155,700 plays and 24,700 likes in five days (shown below).
