I'm a Matcha Nigga Now refers to a catchphrase in a viral video shared by TikToker Kyle Umemba (@kyleumemba) in February 2025, which is about him switching from coffee to green matcha tea. The video resonated with other Black men who used the viral TikTok sound to show themselves drinking matcha lattes.

Origin

On February 16th, 2025, TikToker[1] @kyleumemba posted a video of himself in the car, drinking a matcha latte. He first says to the camera, "Y'all, I gotta let niggas know something, man. I'm a matcha nigga now, man." The video received over 2.7 million likes in a month (shown below).

He also posted the video to his Instagram[2] account @kyleumemba on February 17th, gaining over 305,500 likes in a month.

In the following weeks, others used the video's TikTok sound[3] for their content. For instance, on February 16th, 2025, TikToker[10] @casketpaint posted a video of himself lip dubbing the sound, writing, "Matcha for the guys now ladies, sorry not sorry," gaining over 79,300 likes in a month (shown below).

On February 17th, TikToker[4] @alissajanaee shared a photo slideshow with the sound, showing photos of her homemade matcha and an exploited weather app screenshot with matcha symbols (shown below). The slideshow received over 480,800 likes in a month.

On February 21st, 2025, TikToker[5] @ibronextdoor_ posted a video of himself with a matcha cup, reiterating the original catchphrase. He called the drink "demure" in text overlay. The video received over 260,100 likes in a month (shown below).

On February 28th, Twitter / X [9] user @problemochile tweeted, "This 'matcha nigga' shit getting really annoying 'cause I can't even order a matcha without the white liberal barista giving me a certain smile now," gaining over 19,000 likes in a month (shown below).

On March 1st, 2025, TikToker[6] @mofeworld posted a video in which he expressed a similar gripe. He said, "I haven't been able to order matcha in peace." The video received over 290,500 likes in three weeks (shown below).

On March 7th, Instagram[8] user @cringecob posted an AI video that animated a J.D. Vance Photoshop saying the "I'm a Matcha Nigga" script in an AI voice. Over 20 days, the Reel received roughly 30,000 likes (X[11] repost shown below).

On March 16th, 2025, TikToker[7] @sb.aldoo posted a parody Snapchat story of someone trying matcha for the first time, using the "I'm a Matcha Nigga" sound. Over nine days, it received roughly 240,500 likes (shown below).
