About
I'm A Coconut is the name of a viral children's song created by Swedish musician Emil Gustavsson in 2016. The song, which employs a repeated catchy theme for the Swedish gender-neutral coconut to sing over, became a viral success in late 2023 as both a background audio on TikTok and the dance done within the animated music video.
Origin
On May 15th, 2016, Emil Gustavsson uploaded the song he wrote, titled "I'M A COCONUT," to a YouTube channel created for the song, called Coconut Hen.[1] In the song, the singing coconut makes a point to say that it is a non-gendered Swede, is a coconut and likes to dance, while showing footage of kids doing a choreographed dance, earning 8.4 million views in six years (shown below).
Spread
In late 2023, the audio became popularized on TikTok as part of a CapCut video template in which a picture would be shown before switching to a mini version of the center was superimposed on a dancing coconut. On September 19th, 2023, TikToker everland_official[2] used the template and the background audio to showcase their Panda Fubao, earning over 82,000 likes in seven months (shown below).
This song would continue to see usage over the next few months, with updates being made to the template over time and different variations appearing as it evolved.
On January 1st, 2024, TikToker kulie.djifer[3] uploaded a TikTok in which their cat was used in a newer template using the same audio. In this newer template, the second picture super-imposed on top of the coconut is different from the first, with newer animations also helping it gain over 1.5 million likes in three months (shown below).
