About

I'll Give You Something to Cry About is a series of two-panel exploitable webcomics in which a father says the phrase to his crying son before handing him a book that will make him cry harder. Online, people replace the title of the book with other humorous titles.

Origin

On June 9th, 2018, comics artist Cedric Hohnstadt published a two-pane comic on his website sketchbooksilliness.com (shown below).[1] The comic features a father handing his cying son a copy of Old Yeller after saying, "If you want to cry, I'll give you something to cry about!"



Spread

Two days later, June 10th, Redditor [2] PeedsMomma posted the comic in the /r/MemeEconomy. The post received more than 180 points (97% upvoted).

Days later, on June 14th, Redditor[4] PoisonousPanacea posted a variation (shown below, left) in which the book is re-titled "The rise and fall of the Third Reich." The post received more than 2,300 points (95% upvoted) and 25 comments.

The following week, Redditor[5] AnxiousBasterd posted a version in /r/ProgrammerHumor in which the book is about Java programming language. The post (shown below, center) received more than 180 comments (87% upvoted) within one month.

On July 23rd, the comic was shared on /r/MemeEconomy by Redditor[3] Kl4d1L posted a variation in which the book is titled "The Fall of the Soviet Union".
