IKEA Job In Roblox refers to an employment opportunity advertised by the Swedish department store and furniture brand IKEA to staff a virtual location within the video game Roblox. Following the job posting in early June 2024, users on TikTok, X and other social media platforms discussed the concept of working a job and earning real money within a video game. The promotion of the in-game position also garnered a significant amount of press coverage.

Origin

IKEA announced the job opening on June 3rd, 2024, in a press release.^[1] The limited number of paid roles will be within "The Coworker Game," an immersive in-Roblox experience in which players can venture across an IKEA-themed digital world and enjoy "the opportunity to experience IKEA's unique approach to careers." There are 10 open positions at the IKEA Roblox store, hiring individuals based in the United Kingdom and paying 13.15 British pounds or 14.80 euros per hour. The store was set to open on June 24th, 2024.^[2]

In the press release, IKEA wrote:

We’re excited to be the first brand to launch paid work on Roblox to showcase how we do careers differently, bringing our unique careers philosophy to life. At IKEA, there is no set route to career progression. Our co-workers are able to change roles, switch departments, and grow in any direction they choose, both in the game or in the real world. There are many ways to learn and grow at IKEA, and that's what IKEA on Roblox is all about.

Roblox already featured digital stores for companies like Walmart, where users could buy both virtual and real items. However, the integration of human staff into the virtual IKEA in Roblox was hailed as a new frontier for ecommerce by some. The hiring site for the IKEA Roblox role asks a series of questions of potential employees (seen below) several of them about their comfort with becoming virtual.

The Roblox ecosystem news account Bloxz Media on X posted purported "leaks" from the IKEA Coworker game, including the June 4th, 2024, post (seen below) which received eight likes over the course of 20 hours.^[3] Bloxz Media had picked up on the IKEA press release and posted about the game on June 3rd.

Users on TikTok made content about applying to the IKEA Roblox job. TikToker @khoslaa filmed herself applying for the position, earning 14,600 likes and 174,000 views in the course of five hours on June 5th (seen below, left).^[4] Others, like @tara_the_turtle_123 posted about applying for the Roblox job with a tone of whimsical despair. They earned over 5,400 likes and 49,000 views in the course of seven hours on June 5th.^[5]

TikToker @bloopineapple created a TikTok photo slideshow (seen below) using audio from Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets Department. The post received over 61,000 views and 10,800 likes in the course of one day on June 4th (seen below).^[6]

On June 5th, 2024, YouTuber Critikal uploaded a video to his channel discussing the Roblox IKEA position, receiving over 1.1 million views, 50,000 likes and 4,000 comments in 24 hours (shown below).
