About
Ignore My Dad or Ignore My Yawn refers to a trend on TikTok where users post a video on any given subject and ask viewers to ignore their yawn or variations using the phrasal template "ignore my X," followed by a loud, hard-to-ignore yell representing "X." The trend became popularized on the app in April 2022.
Origin
Sometime prior to April 5th, 2022, a now-deleted TikToker,[2] @.mlkey, posted an original sound consisting of silence followed by a loud yell. On April 5th, 2022, TikToker[1] @xfliq posted a video where he shows an Xbox message where a friend asks him to hop on Rainbow Six Siege captioned, "Bro really told me to hop on siege💀 (ignore my yawn)," followed by the loud yell meant to be the yawn (shown below). The video gained over 1.8 million views in six days.
Spread
The screaming sound became popularized on TikTok over the following days, used in similar videos where viewers are asked to ignore the obvious sound. On April 6th, TikToker[3] @lunchablescurecancer posted a video set to the sound, gaining over 1.9 million views in five days (shown below, left). On April 7th, TikToker[4] @notx9inety6ixfrfr posted a similar video showing off an Elden Ring character, gaining over 1.3 million views in five days (shown below, right).
Variations on the captions also became prevalent, changing "yawn" to "cheer" or popularly, "dad." For example, on April 10th, TikTokers[5][6] @fuegoe90 and @devansack posted a video with variations of the caption "ignore my dad," gaining over 11.6 million and 864,000 views in a day (shown below, left and right).
