About

If You Ain't Got No Money Take Your Broke Ass Home refers to a trend on TikTok set to the opening of the song "Glamorous" by Fergie.[1] The trend sees TikTokers act out skits in which they play someone with no money in a situation/location where they require money and are forced to leave by another party. Some videos see TikTokers act out skits where they berate someone for being broke, followed by a surprise visit from John Quiñones of the hidden camera show What Would You Do? There is also a dance associated with the song, in which two TikTokers dance and grind closely, often while wearing designer clothes, while lip-syncing to the song.

Origin

On September 29th, 2020, TikToker browardmadesolo[2] uploaded a video featuring the on-screen caption, "Me Taking My Broke A** Home" where he walks in an exaggerated, rhythmic manner through the mall and streets set to "Glamorous" via an original sound[3] (shown below). The video gained over 1.8 million views in 6 weeks.

It's unknown who started the dance trend associated with the sound, which became popular in late October. One early example was uploaded on October 28th by TikToker Lauren Kettering[3] and her boyfriend, in which they lip-sync to the song and perform a dance that involves clapping and swaying back and forth as one person stands behind the other (shown below). The video gained over 4.5 million views in 2 weeks.

Spread

Following the success of browardmadesolo's video, more TikTokers began filming skits using his original sound. On October 4th, 2020, TikToker zayyheem[4] uploaded a skit in which he plays a broke man in a club who hears the DJ singing the lyrics, "If you ain't got no money take your broke ass home," realizes the DJ is addressing him directly, and then gets prepared to be kicked out (shown below, left). The video gained over 1 million views in 5 weeks. On October 14th, hennessypapiiii[5] uploaded a similar video set at a strip club, gaining over 738,000 views in 4 weeks (shown below, right).

On October 21st, TikToker jkpiv[6] uploaded a skit in which a poor child at a McDonald's asks him for money. He proceeds to tell the child "take your broke ass home" via lip-syncing before a still frame of John Quiñones pops up with the on-screen caption, "Hi I'm John Quiñones from what would you do" as if the TikToker has just been caught (shown below). The video gained over 2.8 million views in 3 weeks.

Addison Rae Bryce Hall Joker & Harley Quinn Parodies

On October 31st, TikToker Addison Rae uploaded a video[7] set to browardmadesolo's sound in which she and Bryce Hall perform a choreographed dance, including heavy grinding, while in Joker and Harley Quinn costumes (shown below). The video gained over 91 million views and 13 million likes in 11 days.

Rae's video went viral on TikTok, with many taking it as evidence that Rae and Hall are dating, a belief that has persisted among fans of the TikTokers for months. TikTokers proceeded to make their own versions of the video, as well as parodies and duets teasing Rae and Hall about their relationship status[8][9] (examples shown below).
