While the exact origin of the copypasta is unknown, it is rumored to have originated on 4chan according to the Meme Archives Tumblr blog.^[2] On December 14th, 2008, the question was anonymous submitted to the online Q&A community Yahoo Answers,^[6] marking the earliest archived instance of the copypasta.

Spread

On December 29th, 2011, Prince Forums^[5] user HobbesLeCute replied to a thread titled "More Random Thoughts" with the question. On October 9th, 2012, Tumblr user kaijew^[1] posted an illustration of a startled-looking woman reading a text message containing the copypasta (shown below). Within three years, the post gained over 124,000 notes.

On August 19th, 2013, The Amazing Atheist posted a response to the copypasta on Tumblr,^[4] revealing that his inbox had been spammed with the question. On March 2nd, 2014, Redditor TheGullibleParrot submitted a post about the copypasta to the /r/OutOfTheLoop^[3] subreddit. On July 13th, 2015, YouTuber Stets Uninu uploaded a video titled "If there were two guys on the moon…," featuring edited footage from the animated television show Steven Universe edited to sound as if a character was saying the copypasta (shown below).
