If it fits I sits is a LOLcat image macro series based on photos of cats or other domestic animals resting in unexpected places or on top of unusual objects like plastic containers and laptops.

Origin

The grammatically incorrect phrase "If it fits, I sits" stems from a wordplay on the slogan "If It Fits, It Ships" adopted by the U.S. parcel service United States Postal Service for its holiday advertising campaign in 2009. Since the broadcast of the TV commercial, the slogan became occasionally used as the title for photo threads on Reddit^[2] showing cats snugly resting in cardboard boxes.

The earliest known instance of the image macro series was posted on the ICanHasCheezburger blog^[1] on October 10th, 2011. It featured a photograph of a cat resting inside an egg carton with the caption reading "If it fits… I sits."

On the following day of October 11th, 2011, Redditor Tears submitted the same image macro to the r/funny subreddit with the title "Cat Logic At Its Best,"^[3] which received more than 17,219 up votes. Hundreds of similarly humorous cat macros soon followed thereafter on Reddit, many of which were presented as examples of "Cat Logic," a related LOLcat concept that pokes fun at the lazy and mischievous behaviors of domestic cats.

The phrase has been since adopted by a number of other photo-sharing communities like Tumblr^[5] and Flickr^[9], as well as being featured on dozens of internet humor and pet-related blogs.^[4]^[6]^[7] The presence of the catchphrase has been particularly strong on Reddit, where it is frequently used as the title for cute animal posts in subreddits like r/cats and r/aww. In responding to the growing volume of "If it fits I sits" posts, a subreddit specifically designated for "If It Fits, I Sits"^[8] image macros was launched on March 12th, 2012.
