IdkSterling Yapping refers to a series of memes and parodies that show TikToker IdkSterling interrupting a video to "yap" exemplified by him being greenscreened in and sped-up, having his words replaced with a nonsensical audio. The trend started on TikTok in November 2023, as a way to make fun of the TikToker for seemingly talking about nothing important, akin to the slang term "yapping." Many of the memes were paired with IdkSterling's signature sound called "バラック集落 – ききやま" which included a "Ho ho ho" sound effect from a Santa Claus voice.

Origin

TikToker^[1] @idksterling is a creator on TikTok with over 5.4 million followers as of November 20th, 2023. His videos roughly follow the same format, starting with a creepy or disturbing viral video in which he is greenscreened over, talking about and explaining its contents. His videos predominantly use the same TikTok sounds^[2]^[3] which are called "バラック集落 – ききやま" and "Nothing Can Be Explained – Anime de Japan" on the app. IdkSterling also uses a sound effect that sounds like Santa Claus saying "Ho ho ho" (examples shown below).

In late 2023, IdkSterling's format started to gain parodies on TikTok in which creators used his primary sounds^[2]^[3] and greenscreened him into viral videos but replaced his audio with nonsensical audios akin to the precursor "yapping" trend. Currently, the first known creator to upload a parody was TikToker^[4] @lilastrov2p on November 15th, 2023, who wrote, "What is @IdkSterling yappin about 💀" in the caption, gaining over 432,300 plays and 36,100 likes in five days (shown below).

Spread

The trend continued to spread going into November 2023, evident in a video posted by TikToker^[5] @thebextizux on November 15th, 2023, that dealt with Herobrine, gaining over 222,800 plays and 24,200 likes in five days (shown below, left).

On November 17th, 2023, TikToker^[6] @masyonburgeri75 posted a Plants vs. Zombies iteration, receiving over 1.6 million plays and 256,000 likes in three days (shown below, right).

Viral iterations continued to surface on TikTok^[7] going into late November 2023.
