IDGAF, sometimes written without the "I" as DGAF, is an acronym and internet slang expression that stands for the phrase "I Don't Give A Fuck." The acronym has been used in internet text speech since at least 2003, with the phrase predating its abbreviation by at least a decade. Definitions for the term on internet dictionary sites began appearing in the mid-2000s, and the word appeared in music and memes soon after.

Origin

On April 2nd, 2003, Urban Dictionary^[1] user jonsae posted the earliest known meaning for the term "IDGAF," defining it as a word used by "lazy tossers who can't be bothered to type let alone think of a decent response to any form of comment directed at them." The post gathered over 800 likes in two decades (seen below, left). On June 15th, 2006, a definition for the term was posted to NetLingo.^[2]

On June 14th, 2009, the band Blood On the Dance Floor released a song titled "I.D.G.A.F." The music video for the track has over 560,000 views in over a decade (seen below).^[3]

In 2012, a joke about "IDGAF" meaning "I Don't Give Away Food" popularized as a Twitter copypasta. Twitter^[4] user @Laughbook posted a tweet using the joke on April 8th, 2012, gathering over 1,000 retweets and 200 likes in ten years (seen below, left). On April 9th, 2012, Twitter^[5] user @miilkkk posted the joke as well, gathering over 1,000 retweets and 200 likes as well (seen below, right).

On December 1st, 2013, Instagram^[6] page @kobellos posted a meme using the acronym (seen below, left). On March 1st, 2015, Twitter^[7] page @CauseWereGuys posted a tweet using the acronym, gathering over 2,000 likes in eight years (seen below, right).
