About

I Went Here and Everyone Knew You or I Went to the Convention / Factory and They All Knew You is a series of memes using the phrasal template "I went to the X and everyone knew you," "X" being a location or community with a comedic, suggestive or problematic name that implies the subject of the joke, the reader, is part of the "X" community or partakes in the lifestyle associated with "X." The meme is derived from the catchphrase "I went to your hood and nobody knew you" and began growing in popularity around January 2022.

Origin

Throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s, the insult, "I went to your hood and nobody knew you" became increasingly popular online, appearing as early as March 21st, 2017, on Instagram[1] and being posted to X[2] by rapper Roddy Ricch on January 10th, 2020 to over 80,000 likes in seven years (shown below). It is unclear who coined the phrase.

On January 27th, 2022, X[3] user @murderbirv posted, "I went to the local shit eating trough and they all knew you," garnering around 13 likes in two years (shown below). It is unclear if this is the first time the spin on "I went to your hood and nobody knew you" was posted, but is the earliest available example.

Spread

Memes using variations of the phrase became increasingly popular throughout 2022. On September 26th, 2022, now-suspended X[4] user @JUNIPER posted, "went to the dick sucking factory and they all knew you," garnering over 27,000 likes before it was removed (shown below).

The meme became notably popular that October, as users posted new variations of it using the phrasal template "I went to the X factory" or "I went to the X convention and everyone knew you." On October 17th, Buzzfeed[5] published an article collecting some examples of the trend, including an October 14th, post by X[6] user @BigTucsonDad that gained over 219,000 likes in just over a year (shown below).

The meme continued to spread throughout 2023. On September 15th, 2023, X[7] user @grillpill_ posted an image of a street sign reading "Princess St.," writing, "I went here and everyone knew you," garnering over 31,000 likes in four months (shown below, left). The meme was reposted by Instagram[8] user puncrastination on September 17th, garnering over 30,000 likes in the same span of time. On December 30th, X[9] user @catboylitterbox posted a version of the meme using an image of the "KYS bar," garnering over 2,000 likes in five days (shown below, right).
