About

I Wanna Go Home or I Want To Go Home is a song performed by an African girl that became a TikTok sound in 2022, used by video creators that wanted to showcase a situation, setting or action that would make them want to go home instead of being out. The original video comes from a Nigerian gospel group called Destined Kids and their song "It's a Holiday."

Origin

On December 25th, 2011, the Nigerian, children's gospel group Destined Kids created a video for their song "It's a Holiday." [1] The original 2011 upload of the video to YouTube has since been deleted. Regardless, Destined Kids are a notable Nigerian music group that many people within the country recognize. The group contains six siblings.[2]

Their video for "It's a Holiday" was uploaded again to YouTube on April 25th, 2021, by the channel DESTINED KIDS by iwueze- okplaeze rejoice. Over the course of 14 months, it received roughly 34,300 views (shown below). Within the first minute, one of the girl siblings sings, "I wanna go home. I wanna go home," in reference to wanting to be home with her mom for the holidays.

Spread

On May 8th, 2022, TikToker[3] esosaadun1 posted a video meme that captioned the Destined Kids music video for "It's a Holiday" with "After coming to visit him and he starts pressing his phone." Over the course of one month, the video received roughly 2.1 million plays and 175,000 likes (shown below).

Inspired by esosaadun1's video, creators started using the sound for their own content. On June 6th, 2022, TikToker[4] yhunniee_ posted a video about wanting to go home after finding out her male hook-up had a bigger butt than her, earning roughly 1.2 million plays and 209,500 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On June 7th, 2022, TikToker[5] nav_shorty replicated yhunniee_'s use of the sound by posting a video that joked about her boyfriend putting a towel on his bed after she told him she was on her period. The video received roughly 919,300 plays and 224,300 likes in three weeks (shown below, right).

More videos and usage of the sound continued to build going into the remainder of June 2022. As of June 28th, 2022, the sound[6] amassed roughly 104,600 videos using it.
