About

"I Try So Hard To Be His Friend" is a portion of tweet by United States President Donald Trump directed at North Korean Supreme Leader Kim John Un. The contents of the tweet, which include a passive aggressive attack on the North Korean leader, have been copied and parodied on Twitter since the tweet's initial posting.

Origin

Following months of trading insults, on November 11th, 2017, President Trump tweeted,[1] "Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me 'old,' when I would NEVER call him 'short and fat?' Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!" The post (shown below) received more than 130,000 retweets and 587,000 likes in less than three days.

Spread

Virtually all news outlets covered Trump's tweet, specifically his referring to Kim Jong Un "short and fat," including CNN,[2] The New York Times,[3] Vox,[4] BBC,[5] Australian Broadcast Corp News,[6] MarketWatch,[7] The Guardian,[8] Business Insider[9] and more.

Over the next few days, people on Twitter began parodying Trump's tweet by replacing Kim Jong Un's name with personal, humorous feuds the user holds or feuds from pop culture, such as college professors (shown below, left), He-Man (shown below, center), Dr. Who (shown below, right) and more.
