"I Think It's So Awesome" Girlfriend

"I Think It's So Awesome" Girlfriend is an image macro of a woman laying down in bed holding the hand of the meme's viewer while telling them that she thinks a commonly undesirable trait or skill of their's is "so awesome." The original photograph of the woman was taken in 2015 and posted to Tumblr. From there, it was captioned by meme creators who developed a phrasal template with "I think it's so awesome how you just X" that was used predominantly on Instagram.

Origin

On February 14th, 2015, Tumblr^[1] user sapphicchill posted two photos of herself with the caption, "cried all my makeup off." The secondary photo featured her laying down in bed shirtless, on her side holding the hand of the male photographer (shown below, right). Over the course of seven years, the post received roughly 238,000 notes.

Spread

On April 5th, 2016, sapphicchill's photo was used as the image macro for a motivational text post uploaded to the Spanish-speaking website Desmotivaciones^[2] by the user Añadido (shown below). The primary text "Despertarte junto a la persona que…" translates to "Waking up next to the person who…"

In April 2021, the image macro became associated with a phrasal template that followed "I think it's so awesome how you just X" where creators replaced the "X" with a commonly undesirable trait or quirk that the imagined girlfriend felt was attractive.

On April 1st, 2021, the Instagram^[3] page twink.tummies posted a meme that referenced the romanticization of shitposting when it captioned sapphicchill's photo with, "'I think it's so awesome how you just post whatever you want,'" receiving over 140 likes in one year (shown below).

On May 8th, 2021, the Instagram^[4] page fakebaudrillard reposted twink.tummies' meme, earning roughly 1,100 likes in one year. Other Instagram^[5] pages reposted the meme, snowballing it into mass engagement that eventually spread elsewhere like to platforms like iFunny. ^[6]

More iterations emerged going into 2021 and 2022. For instance, on May 23rd, 2021, Instagram^[7] page fad_albert posted a version that referenced someone who eats more hallucinogenic mushrooms than they can handle thus destroying an Airbnb. It received roughly 4,600 likes in one year (shown below, left). On June 22nd, 2021, Twitter user freddiegenerate (since deleted) tweeted a version that romanticized drinking eight beers and gambling all night, earning an unknown amount of likes (shown below, right). However, the meme was reposted on Instagram^[8] where it received roughly 14,000 likes in one year.
