I Think I Wrote The Song Of The Summer refers to a trend popularized on TikTok in 2021 in which musicians promote their content as "the song of the summer." The phrase became the subject of sarcastic memes in 2023, with people making fun of the creators on the platform.
The idea of a song of the summer has been around for years, but in the early 2000s, the label "song of the summer"[1] became a competition goal amongst musicians. In 2021, with the rise of TikTok, emerging artists used the platform to promote their work as the "song of the summer," like @alliwalkermusic's TikTok[2] posted on March 2nd, 2021, a video with the caption "I think I just wrote your summer JAM." The video garnered 642,000 views and 114,000 likes in two years (seen below).
On April 12th, 2023, TikToker[3] @superkeara posted a video explaining the trend. She goes on to point out that most of the videos of the trend are posted inside the musician's car followed by the phrase "Guys, I think I wrote the song of the summer." The post garnered 1.1 million plays and 324,000 likes in one day (seen below).
TikTok[4] user @setaminata dueted @superkeara's video on the same day, commenting on the song of the summer trend. The video (seen below, left) garnered 37,600 plays and 6,300 likes in a day. TikTok[5] user @sweetfellas decided to post a sarcastic video mocking the musicians promoting their songs. The video (seen below, right), uploaded on April 12th, garnered 1,000 plays and 106 likes in a day.
