I Raised That Boy refers to a scene from 2019 anime series Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War! in which character Chika Fujiwara points at character Miyuki Shirogane, whom she trained to play volleyball, and says that she raised that boy. Online, an image macro based on the scene was circulated as a reaction image.
Origin
On February 9th, 2019, episode five of the anime series Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War! premiered.[1] In the part "Miyuki Shirogane Wants to Show Off" of the episode, character Miyuki Shirogane recruits character Chika Fujiwara to train him to play volleyball. Following a week of hard training, Chika and Miyuki succeed. During the volleyball match, Chika points and Miyuki and tells her friend Kaguya Shinomiya that "she raised that boy" (scene shown below).
On the same day, Redditor[2] Kenshi_15 posted the first known meme based on the format which gained over 8,700 upvotes in /r/animemes in six months (shown below).
Spread
Starting on February 9th, 2019, the format started gaining popularity in /r/animemes subreddit. On that day, Redditor[3] HamtaiHentai posted the earliest derivative meme which received over 880 upvotes in six months (shown below, left). Later on the same day, Know Your Meme user Ingway uploaded[4] a captioned still image to the site (shown below, right).
On February 9th and 10th, Tumblr[5] user ama-nee and Imgur[6] user JustANormalWeeb uploaded a collections of captioned still images from the episode, including the "I Raised That Boy" still. On February 10th, 2019, Redditor[7] Rizzutot posted a meme which received over 9,200 upvotes in six months (shown below). On February 13th, YouTube[8] user Ayumi Senpai uploaded the scene to the site, where it accumulated over 3.3 million views in two years.
Following the spread of the format in /r/animemes in February 2019, the format gained further spread on Reddit in the following months, reaching mainstream popularity in December 2019 with multiple viral posts in major meme subreddits.[9][10]
