I Present: $100 Of Groceries refers to reactions and memes inspired by a post made on X by user @ryanflorence after he posted an image showing what he buys for groceries using $100 in mid-September 2023. Reactions to the post varied between people discussing rising inflation and people discussing the lack of thriftiness in the original grocery haul post. Initial reactions to the post had people criticizing @ryanflorence for exaggerating the price of his groceries, buying expensive pre-cut fruit, and buying name-brand cereal and protein bars.
X[2] user @low_dosage reposted the image on September 14th, 2023, with the caption, "has there ever been one of these style tweets where the person didn't embarrass themselves with what they bought," gathering over 18,000 likes in four days. Also on September 14th, X[3] user @primalignity reposted the image calling @ryanflorence "world's least savvy shopper," gathering over 7,000 likes in four days (seen below, right).
Other X users posted in support of the idea that the price of groceries has increased in recent years, with X[4] user @fatfabfeminist saying, "ppl are missing the point. instead of saying dont buy name brand things or whatever you can just understand that regardless, this amount of food should not cost $100 and inflation has made an impact on peoples everyday lives and we shouldn’t need to use tips and tricks to survive." The September 15th post gathered over 48,000 likes in three days (seen below, left)
