On February 15th, 2024, The Cut's^[1] financial-advice columnist Charlotte Cowels published an account of getting scammed out of $50,000. The article opened with the words, "I never thought I was the kind of person to fall for a scam" (snippet shown below).

On that day, X^[2] user @kattenbarge posted a link to the article, with their post gaining over 9.4 million views, 2,800 reposts and quote posts, and 3,900 likes in one day (shown below).

The article became a subject of jokes and viral discussions in the following days. On February 15th, 2024, X^[3] user @McHenryJD posted a Dune meme parodying the article which received over 3,100 reposts and 39,000 likes in one day (shown below).
