About
I Never See You at the Club refers to a series of memes using the phrasal template, "I never see you at the club," followed by, "Ok? I never see you at X," X being another, often comedic, location. Versions of the meme have been used online since as early as 2015, but it was popularized on TikTok and X / Twitter in late 2024, with examples of the meme also occasionally going viral on sites like Instagram and Reddit.
Origin
The exact origins of the meme are unconfirmed. It is possible that the memes are inspired by a hustle culture image macro reading, "People always say 'I never see you at the club.' I reply, 'I never see you at the bank,'" which was posted by X[1] user @BudgetsAreSexy on June 26th, 2015. The meme is a repost from the Instagram account exclusiveluxuryinc, which no longer hosts the meme.
On December 14th, 2021, X[2] user @tonyhawktruther posted what seems to be a parody of this phrase, writing, "Them: I never see you at the club. Me: I never see you at the lever that gives you a food pellet when you press it," garnering over 860 likes in three years. This is the earliest known comedic version of the meme.
Spread
The meme continued to spread over the next few years. For example, on March 2nd, 2022, a version of the meme was posted to /r/DDLC[3] referencing the game Doki Doki Literature Club that garnered over 1,300 upvotes in two years.
On September 17th, 2024, TikToker[4] @ODDOBODY posted a version of the meme in which they film a pond under the caption, "'I never see you at the club,' I never see you by the pond," garnering over 180,000 views in two months.
The trend became increasingly popular on both TikTok and X in the latter half of 2024. On October 22nd, TikToker[5] @lordcolleen posted a version of the meme about never seeing someone at the babbling brook, garnering over 3 million views in three weeks.
On October 25th, X[6] user @ramenrams posted, "'I never see you at the club' ok I never see you at an art exhibit," garnering over 42,000 likes in the same rough span of time.
