I Never Pay Attention to Gas Prices, TF Ima Do, Not Get Gas? is an Edgy Skeleton image macro captioned with the catchphrase and a series of recaption memes using the original caption as a phrasal template by replacing "gas" with other products or goods. Originally posted in September 2021, the format achieved virality online in June 2023.
Origin
On May 7th, 2021, Twitter[1] user @talktometay tweeted "I never pay attention to gas prices… tf ima do not get gas? 🥱" The tweet (shown below) received over 1,600 retweets and 6,200 likes in two years.
On August 16th that year, Twitter[2] user @noony0g copied the tweet, with the repost gaining over 20,400 retweets and 108,300 likes in two years.
Prior to September 8th, 2021, Instagram user hollowcloth posted an Edgy Skeleton image macro captioned with the phrase (original post no longer available, shown below).
Spread
On September 8th, 2021, iFunny[3] user Astro reposted the image, with the post being featured and gaining over 19,200 smiles in two years. On September 13th, Twitter[4] user @SKULLERHOOD reposted the image, earning over 4,800 retweets and 38,300 likes in the same period. On September 25th, Tumblr[5] user saikopomps also reposted it, writing, "Using this meme to explain inelastic demand to first year Econ students." The post (shown below) accumulated over 52,500 likes and reblogs in a similar timeframe.
The image did not see use as a meme format until June 2023. On June 5th, 2023, Instagram[6] user @hardimages.v1 posted a version of the image recaptioned to "I never pay attention to meat prices." The post gained over 170 likes in four weeks (shown below, left). On June 24th, Instagram[7] user hardimages.v1 posted a version that received over 133,000 likes in five days (shown below, right).
In late June 2023, the image achieved viral popularity as source material for recaptions, primarily on Twitter and iFunny.
