About
I Love Video Games / Me Too is a parody meme format based on an exploitable image macro in which a woman misinterprets a man saying "I love video games" as him expressing love for Lana Del Ray's song of that name. Based on a screencap from the 2009 film (500) Days of Summer that depicts the characters Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel), the parody format achieved virality on X / Twitter in November 2024. Some variations of the meme also notably use the "I love video games" caption on the original as the phrasal template "I Love X," replacing "video games" with other things in the comparison format.
Origin
On November 5th, 2024, the X[1] / Twitter account @elyelgow_ posted a two-panel meme in Portuguese based on a still image from the 2009 romantic comedy film (500) Days of Summer. In the meme, the character Tom Hansen, portrayed by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is captioned with the line, "I love video games," with the character Summer, portrayed by actress Zooey Deschanel, answering, "Me too." The second panel reveals that the female character misinterpreted "video games" as singer Lana Del Rey's song of the same name. The post (shown below) received over 360 reposts and 2,900 likes in one week.
On November 8th, 2024, X[2] user @honeyonthevine_ posted a translated version of the meme. The post (shown below) received over 34,000 reposts and 275,000 likes in three days.
Spread
In the following days, the image inspired parodies as users replaced and altered the second panel of the meme, editing in various games, usually mismatched, for the man and the woman. On November 9th, 2024, X[3] user @dollblkp posted the earliest found edit of the meme that received over 60 reposts and 280 likes in two days.
Later on November 10th, 2024, X[4] user @cookimyun posted an edit that labeled the man with video games generally considered basic and the woman with games that are more hardcore. The post (shown below) received over 14,000 reposts and 139,000 likes in one day.
More edits of the image were shared on X and Reddit on November 10th. For example, on that day, Redditor Photosphops_Penises shared an edit that garnered over 4,900 upvotes in the /r/memes[5] subreddit in roughly one day (shown below).
