About

I Just Left a Hipster Coffee Shop is a phrasal template based on a tweet stating that coffee shops that would typically be frequented by liberals have become meeting places for young conservatives. Following the tweet, people ended the phrase "I just left a hipster coffee shop" with absurd punchlines.

Origin

On July 16th, 2018, rightwing activist Jacob Wohl tweeted,[1] "I just a left a hipster coffee shop. It was packed with liberals, whispering amongst each other about what a commendable job President Trump did with Vladimir Putin this morning in Helsinki -- America is PROUD! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ" The post (shown below) received more than 930 retweets and 2,400 likes in three days.

Spread

Following the tweet, people began mocking Wohl and the assertion that Wohl had tweeted similar things in the past.[2] Twitter[3] user @SimonMaloy tweeted (shown below, left), "I just left a hipster coffee shop, it was packed with liberals, whispering amongst each other about how they like and RT all my tweets and think everyone who calls my feed 'a hot sewer pipe of putrescent offal' is a Russian agent."

Twitter user @Yair_Rosenberg posted[4] a screen capture of a number of Wohl's tweets about "hipster coffee shops" (shown below, center). They captioned the post, "The most likely explanation of these tweets is that the guy is making it all up. But I prefer to believe that there is a hipster coffee shop in his neighborhood where the customers hilariously conspire to con him into thinking they're Trump supporters every time he walks in."

Throughout the day, more users posted the phrase and mocked the original post.

On July 19th, The Daily Dot [5] published an article about the tweets.
