I Just Flipped the Switch or the Flip the Switch Challenge is an internet challenge on TikTok set to "Nonstop" by Drake where users lie on the floor then raise and lower their leg, cutting to a transition in outfits when their leg lands. In 2020, a version of the trend went viral on TikTok in 2020 where couples transition into each others clothes over the song, going viral again in 2022 with the leg transition trend.
Origin
Clothing Swap Trend
On November 26th, 2019, TikToker[1] @dallinxbella posted a video set to "Nonstop" where the couple poses in front of the mirror. After Drake sings, "I just flipped the switch," the lights go off then on, revealing the two in each other's clothing (shown below, left). The video gained over 1.1 million likes in three years and started a trend under the original sound where TikTokers do the same (example shown below, right). The original sound was used in over 600,000 videos by August 2022.
Cosplay Transition Trend
On July 3rd, 2022, TikToker[2] @cornelialovesdogs posted a video set to the same song where she raises her leg high then lowers it to the ground, transitioning to Metroid cosplay after her foot hits the ground, garnering over 61,000 views in two months (shown below).
Spread
The cosplay trend spread over the course of July and August 2022. On July 5th, 2022, TikToker[3] @slayeas posted a video transitioning to Metroid cosplay, garnering over 5 million views in two months (shown below, left). On July 16th, she posted another video to TikTok[4] following the trend, garnering over 10 million views in the same rought span of time. On August 4th, TikToker[5] @miawaiifuxo posted a video transitioning to Overwatch cosplay, garnering over 4.6 million views in a month (shown below, right).
